2019, shook foundations of many around the world on a personal level and even impacting the foundation of our global political landscape. This blog is not on politics or pointing fingers at anyone. I am writing today because 2019 shook my world, and the entire foundation I have built my life and career upon this closing decade. What remains in my life is my faith in my life mission to be of service, help heal the planet, and the talents I was given at birth, the ability to lead as a visionary, inspire, and artistically create.
This year I was finally able to execute a project I held dear in my heart for almost a decade, my carbon calculator that allows people to understand how positive, sustainable actions can carry the reverse effect of emissions, emissions avoided. In August, I marched on the streets of San Francisco with the youth crying out for our local and world leaders to step up and take the increasing carbon emissions on our planet as an emergency. That same night I took a red-eye flight to join the conversation at the United Nations Climate Action Summit, where once again, I heard the cries of the youth, who fear for their future and the future of the planet.
If any of you are a mom, grandmother, daughter, sister, father, grandfather, uncle, son, young or old, and you want to do something to help reduce the emissions of the planet, but don’t know where to start? Do you want to start the new year, 2020, or even better yet, the new decade with a resolution that doesn’t just serve you on a personal level, but for your family, community and also the planet? If you have heard of the concept, zero-waste, but are not sure if it’s possible? Or if you never heard of the term and are curious to understand how this could connect with lowering global emissions? Or you are a zero-waste expert but never quantified your daily choices, and you are now interested in your personal analytics; you have come to the right space.
I created the Resilience Birthright, Earth Warrior Carbon Calculator, to be a personal, community action and mobilization-based tool to help people make those simple changes that can help heal our planet when done by the mass. This calculator will quantify every time you record reusing your straw, refusing a bag at the store, recycle that can or bottle, compost after your meal, walk or bike, pick up those pieces of litter you find on your daily walk and much more. The fantastic thing about this carbon calculator is that it is in alignment with 9 out of 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, making it a tool that can help us move as a global community toward the same direction, and not have to wait for our world leaders to decide on a plan that could take another decade to implement.
Just think of this small analogy; if the United States reused reusable straws, instead of disposing of 500 million single-use plastics straws a day, the choice of reusing straws at that quantity would be equivalent of removing 500 cars off the road a day (Resilience Birthright: Earth Warrior Carbon Calculator). Just a simple choice to reuse something so small as one straw, if done by the mass consumption statistics, have such a huge daily impact, think about what we could do as a collective if we began to really make wiser choices?! Now take that thought and apply it on a global level. Let’s make our 2020 new year and new decade resolution to help heal our planet.
